Dragilla!

I was lucky enough to have one of my designs chosen from the Great Gorilla Project which I sent in entries a few months ago and have just got back from painting the sculpture in the Guildhall Shopping Centre, Exeter. I was situated in a vacant shop window so that lots of people could view me working, and lots of little kids pulling faces through the glass  : D
The Whole experience was great fun and am thrilled to have taken part in such an event. I was the first to complete my gorilla so it shall remain on view for a few weeks and slowly be joined by all the other South Devon artist's gorillas.
It's much better in the flesh so get down for a look while you can and before it's moved from front view.

There are also lots of other aspects running with this project, one of which will be a miniature trail at the Babbacome Model Village which am excited about.

Here's a few snaps of the finished gorilla . . .

Here are some teasers of the Paper project including two that didn't make the cut (one of which was my most accurate and accidental self portrait ever). A little late for teasing but you know you love it

Paper Publication

Finished two entries this week for Paper publication. Paper is a small collective in Bristol that has had it's first issue pressed and is out and around showcasing Bristol artists, as well as continuing to hold their gallery space in the town centre, which started in Christmas and is still rolling due to popularity (also I have some prints in their if you happen to be passing by . . .) The theme for the entry was 'future' meaning to illustrate what could possibly happen any time from now. I can't wait to see what everyone else and put in as entries! More excited for that then to see if I get into the next issue.

My first entry was describing how mankind has played God too long with genetically modified crops which have since then turned back on their creators, forcing humanity to flee from its civilisations and escaping to the safety of true nature, but safe for how long . . . ?

The second has a pretty different feel but I couldn't resist the pun! When thinking how could one man possibly decide the fate of existence I was struck with the answer, who knows!
But then wait! Who knows . . . ? Hugh knows! The task cannot fall onto any less worthy than Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall himself.

Monkey Dance

Made up a flyer/poster for the good people at club night Monkey Dance, Bristol. The design was something fairly quick and fun but was just a good opportunity to get back onto some lino work.

Gromit Unleashed

Gromit Unleashed is a competition being held where artists may submit their designs for the opportunity to paint onto 4ft Gromits (from Wallace & Gromit) these statues will then be placed around Bristol to raise awareness for the charity and also to gain publicity for their auction. At the end of their tour the figures will be auctioned off and all the proceeds will go to the Grand Appeal who are a charity set up to aid sick children primarily working in hospitals. It's an amazing project and all I can do is wait, the results are out in the end of February . . . .

Folio time . . .

So it's come to that time of year again. . . .

Once again Folio Society are holding an open competition for students and practitioners to win a commission from them worth £4500, and of course getting it published with them! Last year it was 'The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories' but this time around it is Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World'. Last year I hadn't read the book but got through it then was working on my images for several weeks, however this time I had read the book recently but didn't get round to doing anything until yesterday . . . and the deadline is this Tuesday! So circumstances are pretty different but this allows for a different way of working, and so far it's not looking too bad but we'll see what happens in the end.
Here's a little spoiler for you . . .

Great Gorillas

Torbay council are organising giant gorillas to be placed all around the town centre and to be painted by various artists chosen by their selected judge panel. Each gorilla will be on show for a few months and at the end they will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, from which all the proceeds will go the great gorilla project. The great gorilla project is set up to raise funds and awareness about the Cross River gorillas of Nigeria which are the worlds most threatened and endangered species of gorillas. Entry closed recently after I had time to send in 3 designs. If I was chosen for this opportunity it would be a great pleasure to be part of such a project and brilliant to see the designs take to streets, just got to wait and see if I get the call . . .

Something different

I've just got back from a busy month of working décor at some British festivals. Not all painting but I did get stuck in when I got the chance. I had varying roles and levels of responsibility with each of these items, some were entirely me and some I just rigged.
Worked with lovely people every time and learnt a lot from each experience.

Secret Garden Party

Boomtown Fair Festival
